At Softgen.ai we thought a lot about this problem for the vibecoding space, so decided to do something radical pro-user: a simple $33/year license fee to use the product, and then pay-as-you-go usage for tokens (we charge a 15% markup on underlying compute).

We then give users total selection on which model to use so they can trade off price & performance for themselves.

Softgen's model leaves margin on the table for unsophisticated users, but frankly is the only fair and aligned way to do it.

This article validated a pricing model that made sense for our business but a customer told me was uncomfortable. Thank you for writing this. You clarified why usage based pricing is the right next model to test
